INVESTMENT CASE STUDY: Medical Devices
The WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device. Atritech developed a new device to prevent stroke and heart attack in patients with atrial fibrillation (“AF”). The product, Watchman, was the first in a new category of devices, designed to close off the left atrial appendage, in which clots typically form in AF patients. Following several years of clinical trials, the WATCHMAN achieved regulatory approval in markets around the world including the US. Atritech was acquired by Boston Scientific for cash and future milestones and royalties.
